PARIS, May 11th, 2012 - the authorization of the building work in the medieval underground career of Paris was cancelled by the administrative court. This cancellation was made Friday because the site is classified historic building.
It is the collective of Port-Mahon and from the farm of Montsouris which gathers associations militant for the safeguarding of a site of the 14th district, street of Falls-Issoire which deposited a recourse to the court for the cancellation of the authorization of construction.
It is against an authorization granted by the regional prefect in May 2011 to the SNC of the Issoire Tomb that the collective deposited a recourse. Work of filling, with mixed cement sand, lower level of exploitation of the career was envisaged on the site.
“The underground career of the way of Port-Mahon, dating from XIVème century, presents a complete panorama of the processes of exploitation of the stone of size at the end of the Middle Ages” according to the court. This site is located, close to the circuit of visit of the catacombs, and is the only one of this time, under Paris, it is possible with the public to reach it.
However, this work could deteriorate the site and this could involve its downgrading whereas only the Council of State can allow it. The prefect did not have competences to authorize work according to the court.
The elected officials Europe-Ecology Verts are content for them that the administrative court of Paris did not give green light to the property developers who wanted to concrete 26 rue de la Tombe-Issoire in spite of the opposition of the inhabitants of the area. For several years, people have tried to safeguard the Parisian inheritance with in particular the protection of this medieval underground career according to the statements made by the advisers.
